Lessons from the Founders Era: Building a Communications Firm That Lasts
When I founded what would eventually become R&J Strategic Communications in 1986, the vision was straightforward: build a firm rooted in integrity, trusted relationships, and strategic thinking. In our earliest days, the company operated as Roberts & John Advertising and Public Relations, a small agency with a big belief that organizations deserved communications partners who cared as deeply about their mission and reputation as they did.
Like many entrepreneurial ventures, the early years were a mix of excitement, uncertainty, and relentless work. We started with a handful of clients, a small but determined team, and a commitment to doing the job the right way. What we lacked in size, we made up for with curiosity, responsiveness, and an unwavering focus on results.
Those early days were shaped by a technology and communications landscape that looked very different from today’s. Traditional media dominated the conversation, advertising and public relations often operated in separate silos, and the pace of change, while significant, was slower than the always-on digital world in which we now live. Even then, however, one truth was already clear: crafting an effective message and providing organizations with thoughtful guidance on how best to communicate with the audiences that mattered most to them was paramount.
One of the earliest challenges we faced was learning how to grow while maintaining the values that defined us. Winning new clients is exciting, but it also raises important questions:
- How do you scale while keeping your service personal and relevant?
- How do you maintain quality as demands increase?
- How do you ensure that every client, both large and small, feels they have a trusted advisor at the table?
Those questions shaped our culture. We built a firm where collaboration mattered, where people were encouraged to bring ideas forward, and where clients knew they could rely on us not just for execution, but for honest counsel.
Another challenge was the constant evolution of communications itself. Over the years, the firm evolved, from Roberts & John Advertising and Public Relations to R&J Group, then R&J Public Relations, and ultimately to R&J Strategic Communications. Each step reflected the changing needs of our clients, the evolution of the communication landscape, and our focus on delivering premier service in an ever-changing marketplace.
As organizations faced more complex reputational challenges, it became clear that communications could no longer be limited to press releases or advertising campaigns. Clients needed integrated strategy that included public affairs insight, crisis preparedness, digital engagement, and the ability to connect policy, community, and reputation in meaningful ways.
That shift presented enormous opportunity. By focusing on strategic counsel rather than simply tactical execution, we were able to help clients navigate some of their most important moments, including organizational transformations, high-stakes public debates, and initiatives designed to strengthen communities. Those experiences reinforced a lesson that still guides our work today: communications, when done thoughtfully and strategically, can make a real difference.
Looking back, the early years also taught me that the most important asset any agency has is its people. Talented professionals who share a commitment to excellence and who genuinely care about their clients’ success create the kind of environment where great ideas thrive. Watching R&J alumni colleagues grow into leaders, both within the firm and across the industry, remains one of the most rewarding aspects of this journey.
Today, the communications environment is faster and more complex than ever. But the core principles that shaped our early years remain the same. Organizations still need trusted advisors who understand strategy, value relationships, and recognize that reputation is perhaps the most valuable asset any organization possesses.
For us, the mission continues: helping clients tell their stories, navigate challenges, and seize opportunities with clarity and confidence.
The early years of building this firm taught us resilience, adaptability, and the importance of staying true to our values. Those lessons still guide us. And they continue to shape how we serve our clients every day.
